The hole is circular in shape, over 300 m (984 ft) across and 124 m (407 ft) deep. It was formed during several episodes of quaternary glaciation when sea levels were much lower. Analysis of stalactites found in the Great Blue Hole shows that formation took place 153,000; 66,000; 60,000; and 15,000 years ago. As the ocean began to rise again, the cave was flooded. Ramon Llaneza diving rebreather explore stargate the entrance to alien underworld in Belize and Bahamas. Watch more details about this exploration at https://youtu.be/mh49kkENw_Q . The Mysterious Belize Great Blue Hole is a large underwater hole off the coast of Belize. It lies near the center of Lighthouse Reef, a small atoll 100 kilometers (62 mi) from the mainland and Belize City. The hole is perfectly circular in shape, over 300 meters (1000 ft) across (diameter), 3140 feet circumference and 125 meters (410 ft) deep. It was formed as a limestone cave system during the last glacial period when the sea level was 400 to 500 feet below present time and was dry land. Last glacial period began about 120,000 years ago and end about 15,000 years ago. Reaching the maximum extension 26,500 years ago. At the end the ocean began to rise, the caves flooded, and the roof collapsed. Believed to be the world's largest feature of its kind, the Great Blue Hole is part of the larger Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System, a World Heritage site of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The hole itself is the opening to a system of caves and passageway that penetrate this undersea mountain. In various places, massive limestone stalactites hang down from what was once the ceiling of air-filled caves thousand of years before the end of the last Ice Age 15,000 years ago. When the ice melted the sea level rose, flooding the caves. This process occurred in stages. Evidence for this are the shelves and ledges, carved into the limestone by the sea, which run the complete interior circumference of the Blue Hole at various depths. The Blue Hole is a "karst- eroded sinkhole." It was once a cave at the center of an underground tunnel complex whose ceiling collapsed. Some of the tunnels are thought to be linked right through to the mainland, though this has never been conclusively proved. Notable are the large population of sharks such as lemon, black tip, reef, hammerhead, and bull sharks. Mysterious and legends always have been around the Belize Blue Hole. This was the entrance to Xibalba?. It's the kind of underwater geology that inspires speculation about aliens creating geometrically perfect anomalies, mermaids and monsters living in darkness. I explored the bottom of the Blue Hole perimeter (3,140 feet circumference). To do this I dove down twice, reaching the depth of 375' feet which took 4 to 5 hours of diving each day. Welcome to my travelchannel. On my channel you can find almost 1000 films of more than 70 countries. Belize is bordered to the north by Mexico, to the south and west by Guatemala and to the east by the Caribbean Sea. Its mainland is about 290 km (180 mi) long and 110 km (68 mi) wide. With 22,960 square kilometres (8,860 sq mi) of land and a population of only 312,698 inhabitants (2010 census),Belize possesses the lowest population density in Central America. The country's population growth rate of 3.15% (2012 est.) is the second highest in the region and one of the highest in the western hemisphere. Belize's abundance of terrestrial and marine species, and its diversity of ecosystems give it a key place within the globally significant Mesoamerican Biological Corridor. Belize has a diverse society, comprising many cultures and languages. It is the only nation in the region with a British colonial heritage, but as a part of the Western Caribbean Zone, it also shares a common heritage with the fellow Anglophone Caribbean countries. In general, Belize is considered to be a Central American nation with strong ties to both the Caribbean and Latin America. Belize is a member of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), and Sistema de la Integración Centroamericana (SICA). Belize is known for its September Celebrations, and is the birthplace of chewing gum and Punta Rock The origin of the name Belize is unclear, but the earliest record of the name is found in the journal of the Dominican priest Fray José Delgado, dating to 1677. Delgado recorded the names of three major rivers that he crossed while traveling north along the Caribbean coast: Rio Soyte, Rio Xibum, and Rio Balis. These names, which correspond to the Sittee River, Sibun River, and Belize River, were provided to Delgado by his translator. It is likely that Delgado's "Balis" was actually the Mayan word belix (or beliz), meaning "muddy-watered". Others have suggested that the name is derived from a Spanish pronunciation of the name of the Scottish buccaneer Peter Wallace, which was applied to an early settlement at the mouth of the Belize River, although there is no proof that Wallace actually settled in the area and some have characterized this claim as a myth.Several other possible etymologies have been suggested by writers and historians, including French and African origins. The Belize Barrier Reef is a series of coral reefs straddling the coast of Belize, roughly 300 meters (980 ft) offshore in the north and 40 kilometers (25 mi) in the south within the country limits. The Belize Barrier Reef is a 300 kilometers (190 mi) long section of the 900 kilometers (560 mi) long Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, which is continuous from Cancún on the northeast tip of the Yucatán Peninsula through the Riviera Maya up to Honduras making it one of the largest coral reef systems in the world after the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and the New Caledonia Barrier Reef. It is Belize's top tourist destination, popular for scuba diving and snorkeling and attracting almost half of its 260,000 visitors, and is vital to its fishing industry. Charles Darwin described it as "the most remarkable reef in the West Indies" in 1842.

Videographer Brandon Martin accompanied Rice Earth Science Professor André Droxler and graduate students to Belize’s coast to study coral reef health. The field trip was a part of a graduate level seminar on carbonates and climate change, and students spent the better part of each day gathering observations in the water, presenting their findings and attending lectures. For Martin, “This was a lot of work for me and a lot of learning for the students,” he said. We followed up with Droxler, one of Rice’s most intrepid researchers, to learn more about coral reef health. Why are reefs indicators of climate change? Coral reefs are biogenic constructions made by a complex and highly diverse assemblage of fauna and flora, therefore need to be considered as a living organism. Often, coral reefs are referred to as the “canary in the coal mine” for oceans. Because they are highly sensitive to slight modifications of temperatures, salinity and nutrient concentration, their global decay is an imminent warning. In other words, reefs show what can be expected to happen for the Earth’s overall environment as a response to global warming and climate change induced by burning fossil fuels and related CO2 emissions. Also, reefs a uniquely reliable ocean archive for past climate change and sea level rise.” How healthy are these reefs? The health of coral reefs has globally deteriorated in the past decades. Recently in the Indo-Pacific Ocean, things have gone from bad to worse. What’s affecting their health? A combination of local and global stresses are affecting coral reefs. On a local scale, overfishing, reef mining, nutrient and turbidity increases and diseases are stressors. On a more global scale, bleaching and calcification lowering, as a direct response to the atmospheric CO2 steady increase, induce warming and acidification of the upper part of the tropical oceans. What are the implications of coral reefs’ dying? Coral reefs are considered to be as indispensable for the wellbeing of the seas as the rain forests are for the Earth’s complex environmental system. Although coral reefs cover less than 1 percent of the ocean floor, they are the life support of 25 percent of all known marine species, more then one million species of plants and animals. What can humans do about it? Decrease the local and global stresses, in particular. As a priority, dramatically decrease the burning of carbon-based fossil fuel in transforming our society energy demand using alternative renewable energies instead. Protecting large parts of the tropical oceans as safe heavens for healthy coral reefs is also a main priority. The cayes off the southern coast of Belize filmed by a DJI Phantom 2/GoPro 4.
